The MEASURE OF A MAN (20 attributes of a godly man) - GENE GETZ
Paul’s Maturity Profile Two paragraphs in Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus give us this powerful profile for testing maturity levels in Christ, both personally and in others (see 1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–10).
Today we touched upon the attribute of- Respectable (good role model)
Gene Getz describes a respectable man as one whose life naturally earns the respect of others because of his character, consistency, and integrity. Respectability doesn’t mean popularity or seeking the approval of people, but rather living in such a way that others can confidently look to him as an example.
Key Points:
A Life Worth Imitating-
A respectable man reflects Christlike qualities others can safely follow.
His life is consistent in both private and public—no hidden hypocrisy.
Dignity and Honor-
He carries himself with seriousness about spiritual things, without being gloomy.
His behavior shows maturity, balance, and respect toward others.
Practical Respectability-
Demonstrated through honesty in work, faithfulness in relationships, and integrity in decisions.
He shows kindness and self-control even under pressure.
The Ripple Effect-
A respectable man influences his family, friends, and church community.
His example points people to Christ and strengthens others’ faith.
👉 In short: Being respectable means living a life of integrity and dignity that sets a Christlike example for others to follow.
Reflection Questions – Respectable (Good Role Model)
Personal Integrity-
Is my life consistent in both public and private?
Would those who know me best (spouse, children, close friends) say my actions match my words?
Influence on Others-
Do I live in a way that others could safely imitate?
Who in my life is currently watching and being shaped by my example?
Character Under Pressure-
How do I respond when I’m frustrated, stressed, or criticized?
Does my reaction reflect Christlike self-control and humility?
Dignity and Respect-
Do people generally see me as trustworthy, dependable, and fair?
If not, what specific areas might be damaging my respectability?
Spiritual Leadership-
In what ways am I modeling spiritual growth for my family, church, or community?
Do I intentionally point others toward Christ by my example, or do I expect them to “figure it out” on their own?
Self-Check on Motives-
Do I seek to be respectable to honor Christ, or am I more concerned with earning human approval?
👉 Application Challenge: This week, ask one trusted person (spouse, child, friend, or colleague): “Do you feel I live consistently in a way worth imitating? If not, where could I grow?”
