The MEASURE OF A MAN (20 attributes of a godly man) - GENE GETZ
Paul’s Maturity Profile Two paragraphs in Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus give us this powerful profile for testing maturity levels in Christ, both personally and in others (see 1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–10).
Today we touched upon the attribute of- Hospitable ( unselfish and generous)
Summary — Being Hospitable (Unselfish and Generous)
In this chapter, Gene Getz explains that hospitality is a core mark of spiritual maturity, especially for Christian men. Hospitality is not simply entertaining people or hosting impressive gatherings; it is a willingness to open one’s life, home, and resources to others in a spirit of genuine love.
Key Themes-
1. Hospitality Reflects the Heart of God
Getz reminds readers that God has shown extraordinary generosity toward us, and Christians are called to reflect that same spirit. Hospitality becomes a practical expression of God's grace toward people.
2. It’s About People, Not Performance
True hospitality is not about having a perfect home, fancy food, or well-planned events. It is about being approachable, warm, caring, and genuinely concerned for others—especially strangers, newcomers, or those in need.
3. It Requires Sacrifice
To be hospitable, a man must be willing to sacrifice:
- Time
- Personal comfort
- Resources
- Privacy
This is what makes hospitality an act of unselfishness. It shows a willingness to put others' needs above one’s own convenience.
4. Hospitality Starts With Attitude
A hospitable man is not simply someone who hosts people — it is someone who:
- Welcomes others into his life
- Lives open-handedly
- Is generous with what God has given him
- Sees people, not possessions, as priority
Getz emphasizes that hospitality stems from a heart of kindness and generosity, not from wealth or personality type.
5. A Key Qualification for Christian Leadership
The chapter ties hospitality to the qualifications for elders and leaders in the New Testament (1 Timothy 3, Titus 1).
Leaders must model:
- Warmth
- Accessibility
- A willingness to help others
This trait demonstrates maturity, love, and a commitment to serving rather than being served.
6. Practical Expressions of Hospitality
Getz gives examples of how hospitality can be lived out:
- Inviting people into your home
- Being attentive to the lonely
- Offering a meal or help during hardship
- Creating space for meaningful relationships
Hospitality helps build community and strengthens the body of Christ.
Overall Message-
Hospitality is a tangible expression of Christian love.
It requires a generous, unselfish spirit that prioritizes people over possessions and comfort. For a man seeking to grow spiritually and lead well, a hospitable lifestyle is not optional—it is essential.
