The MEASURE OF A MAN (20 attributes of a godly man) - GENE GETZ
Paul’s Maturity Profile Two paragraphs in Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus give us this powerful profile for testing maturity levels in Christ, both personally and in others (see 1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–10).
Today we touched upon the attribute of- Able to teach ( communicates sensitiviely in a nonthreatening and nondefensive manner)
In this chapter, Gene Getz explains that being “able to teach” is not limited to formal classroom instruction or preaching. Rather, it refers to a man’s ability to communicate biblical truth clearly, lovingly, and wisely in everyday relationships. Teaching is fundamentally about helping others understand and apply God’s truth, not about proving knowledge or winning arguments.
Key Themes-
1. Teaching Is About Communication, Not Position
Getz emphasizes that many men misunderstand this qualification by assuming it applies only to pastors or elders. In reality, all spiritually mature men are called to teach through conversation, example, and gentle guidance—whether with family, friends, or fellow believers.
2. Sensitivity Is Essential
A man who is able to teach must be:
-A good listener
-Sensitive to others’ backgrounds, emotions, and spiritual maturity
-Aware of timing and context
Teaching without sensitivity can wound rather than build. Effective teachers meet people where they are, not where they think they should be.
3. Nonthreatening Communication Builds Trust
Getz highlights that truth should be communicated in a way that feels safe and respectful, not intimidating. A nonthreatening teacher:
-Avoids harshness and superiority
-Creates openness rather than fear
-Invites dialogue instead of shutting it down
This approach encourages growth because people are more receptive when they feel valued.
4. A Nondefensive Spirit Reflects Maturity
An important mark of being able to teach is the ability to:
-Accept questions and disagreement without anger:
-Admit when one is wrong or still learning
-Respond humbly instead of defensively
Getz points out that defensiveness often reveals insecurity or pride, while humility fosters credibility and learning.
5. Teaching Requires a Firm Grasp of Truth
While attitude is critical, Getz also stresses that a man must know Scripture well enough to teach accurately. However, knowledge must always be governed by love. Truth spoken without grace becomes legalistic or damaging.
6. Jesus as the Ultimate Model
The chapter points to Jesus as the perfect example of someone who taught with:
-Authority and clarity
-Compassion and patience
-Wisdom and discernment
Jesus communicated truth boldly yet lovingly, even when correcting others.
Overall Message:
Being “able to teach” is about how truth is communicated, not just what is communicated.
A spiritually mature man teaches with humility, patience, and grace—creating an environment where others feel safe to grow, ask questions, and change.
