The MEASURE OF A MAN (20 attributes of a godly man) - GENE GETZ
Paul’s Maturity Profile Two paragraphs in Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus give us this powerful profile for testing maturity levels in Christ, both personally and in others (see 1 Tim. 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–10).
Today we touched upon the attribute of- Not addicted to wine (not addicted to substances)
In this chapter, Gene Getz explains that the biblical qualification “not addicted to wine” goes far beyond alcohol. It speaks to a man’s self-control, freedom, and dependence on God rather than on any substance. The issue is not merely consumption, but mastery—whether something controls the man instead of the man controlling his behavior.
Key Themes
1. Addiction Reveals the Issue of Control
Getz emphasizes that Scripture consistently warns against being controlled by anything other than the Holy Spirit. Alcohol, drugs, or any substance that dulls judgment or creates dependence undermines spiritual discernment and leadership credibility.
2. The Principle Goes Beyond Wine
While wine is specifically mentioned in Scripture, Getz broadens the principle to include:
Alcohol
Drugs (legal or illegal)
Any chemical substance used for escape, comfort, or coping
The central concern is dependency, not simply usage.
3. Addiction Damages Judgment and Relationships
A man who is addicted to substances:
Loses clarity in decision-making
Becomes inconsistent and unreliable
Harms their family, friendships, and ministry influence
Getz points out that addiction compromises a man’s ability to model godly living and to lead others wisely.
4. Self-Control Is a Mark of Spiritual Maturity
The chapter highlights self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. A spiritually mature man demonstrates:
Discipline over desires
Awareness of personal weaknesses
Willingness to set boundaries for the sake of holiness and witness
Freedom sometimes means choosing voluntary restraint, even if something is culturally acceptable.
5. Dependence on God, Not Substances
Getz contrasts substance dependence with spiritual dependence. Men often turn to substances to:
Escape stress
Numb pain
Manage anxiety or pressure
True maturity, Getz argues, is learning to rely on God’s strength, comfort, and peace instead of artificial substitutes.
6. Leadership and Example Matter
Because leaders influence others, this qualification carries extra weight. A man who is free from addiction:
Sets a healthy example
Protects his testimony
Creates trust within the church and family
Getz underscores that personal freedom enhances spiritual credibility.
Overall Message:
A man measured by God is controlled by the Spirit, not by substances.
Freedom from addiction reflects self-control, wisdom, and deep reliance on God. For spiritual maturity and leadership, dependence must always be centered on Christ rather than on anything that enslaves.
